In the EU, renewal falls due at each 5-year anniversary of the filing date. EUIPO allows renewal in the 6 months before the due date, with a further 6-month grace period after expiry, subject to a surcharge, before the design lapses.
Because the maximum design term is 25 years total, spread across five 5-year periods, and a lapsed design generally can't be revived after the grace period, timely renewal at each stage is the only way to secure the full available protection for a valuable product design across the EU.
